In 2008, Dr. Everett and staff traveled to a school for indigent street children in Managua, Nicaragua to perform dental screenings and dental treatment for 425 kids. Although we were faced with overwhelming numbers, almost all treatment was completed. This was not Dr. Everett’s first mission trip…his many previous visits to countries lacking access to dentistry provided a manageable template.
In July 2011, Maureen, Dr. Everett’s Office Manager, returned to the school with a nurse and a retired Child Behavioral Specialist to monitor progress since Dr. Everett’s first visit.
They were delighted to learn that:
• General health had improved significantly due to medicine that had been supplied.
• High School graduates were being accepted to University.
• Three additional classrooms had been built.
In Dr. Everett’s ongoing outreach to this community, we are striving to improve basic hygiene at the school, as well as fire and earthquake safety and the creation of an adequate clean water supply for hand washing.
In our July 2011 visit, 200 pounds of supplies were donated, including school, medical, and clothing items. We also helped the children create Christmas stockings.
We are proud and extremely appreciative of our staff’s involvement in these trips. Out hygienist, Kat, traveled to the Philippines for her summer vacation this year and provided dentistry for poor people in rural areas.
We always are in need of donations for our next visit and welcome your participation. If you would like to find out how you can help, please contact Maureen at doctor@alaneverettdds.com .
We look forward to sharing the progress of this very important mission with you in future posts.
