ADRIAN – Adrian Public Schools has promoted its Head Start Assistant Principal to Head Start Principal.
Mary Bruggenwirth has been named director of Adrian’s Head Start program, which is housed at the Drager Early Education Center, effective July 1, according to a press release Thursday from Adrian Public Schools. She was hired as deputy director of Head Start in June 2021 and has served as acting director since September 2021, succeeding David Bull, former director of Head Start for 27 years, according to the statement. When Bruggenwirth was hired last summer, Bull said, “Mary represents the best and brightest of our next generation of leaders in Lenawee County.”
Head Start’s mission is to “promote the school readiness of young children from low-income families by enhancing their cognitive, social and emotional development,” the statement said.
Bruggenwirth holds a Bachelor of Science in Special Education and a Master of Arts in Early Childhood Education. She has over 15 years of experience in early childhood education as well as classroom and educational leadership roles.
“Bruggenwirth’s education and experience make her uniquely qualified to lead this program,” the statement said.
She was recently named Siena Heights University Alumni Rising Star. She is a graduate of the Lenawee Leadership program and has rejuvenated the group of Lenawee child care directors, according to the statement.
The Head Start Early Childhood program has been part of Adrian’s Public Schools since 1965 and serves pregnant mothers and low-income children from birth to age 5. The program offers services that include in-home parenting, center care, social services, and comprehensive health care, including vision, hearing, and dental screenings.
As director of Head Start, Bruggenwirth will lead a team of 70 people and oversee services to 298 children and families throughout Lenawee County, according to the release.
Preschool classrooms are located in Adrian, Addison and Hudson and are operated by Adrian’s Head Start program. Early Head Start classrooms that serve infants and toddlers are located at Adrian.
