Linda Jean Conkright (Nelson) died at her home in Coon Rapids, Minnesota on July 16, 2022, at the age of 70 surrounded by her loving family after a valiant 10-year battle with Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinsons.

Linda was born on June 24, 1952, in Superior, Wisconsin, to Roy C. and Virginia M. Nelson (Curtiss). She grew up in Superior where she attended McCaskill School and Senior High School (Class of 1970). She earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from the University of Wisconsin – Higher in 1974, during which time she met the love of her life and soul mate, John E. Conkright. She began her teaching career in West Bend, Wisconsin as a media center specialist for Green Tree Elementary School. She enjoyed both teaching and being around young children. Linda and John married in August 1976 and would soon have celebrated their 46th anniversary. In 1979, after John graduated from Marquette University School of Dentistry, she returned to Superior to be closer to her family. Linda worked for many years as an office manager for her husband’s dental practice and for everyone was the lifeblood of the office.

Linda was the loving mother of Jennifer and Curtiss. She was an amazing mother, wife, grandmother, sister, sister-in-law, aunt and niece. She was friends with many and will be missed more than she will ever know!

She was the former president of PEO’s AD-BG chapter and former president of the Northern Wisconsin Dental Auxiliary. She also helped start an organization that provided free toothbrushes and other dental items to families in need. She was an expert crocheter and donated blankets over the years to various organizations. She was also a life member of the Pilgrim Lutheran Church.

Linda is predeceased by her parents, Roy and Virginia (Curtiss) Nelson and numerous aunts, uncles and close cousins.

She is survived by her husband John E. Conkright of Coon Rapids, Minnesota, her daughter Jennifer (Seth) Jerabek of Pelham, New York, her son Curtiss Conkright of Blaine, Minnesota, her granddaughters Emerson and Brooklyn Jerabek, her brothers and sisters Din (Herb) Martinson of Glen Allen, Virginia, Nancy (Bob) Clark of Superior, Wisconsin, and Paul (Eva) Nelson of Zurich, Switzerland, as well as numerous brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews.

A celebration of his wonderful life will be held at the Pilgrim Lutheran Church on Friday, August 5, 2022. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., with Pastor Carolyn Mowchan officiating. Arrangements will be made by Downs Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Linda’s name may be made to the MN/WI Alzheimer’s Association (www.alz.org).

As a lifelong reader of all books (including children’s literature), Linda often quoted passages from the authors. At this time, a most relevant quote that she particularly likes seems appropriate. It was a quote from one of his favorite children’s authors, Dr. Suess. The quote: “Don’t cry because it’s over – smile because it happened!”
