Middlesex College is offering a brand new dental hygiene program starting in the fall semester 2021 for licensed dental hygienists who have been out of the field or in need of a clinical refresher course.
Dental Hygiene President Michelle Roman said, “Any licensed dental hygienist can take this course, or anyone who has graduated from a Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) dental hygiene program. “
Sharon Hoffman, former Middlesex College dental student, said: “Since I haven’t been a dental assistant for many years now, this would be a course I would take to brush up on my skills if I returned to dentistry. “
Roman said this course will go over a few things: infection control, digital x-rays, risk assessment, oral disease prevention, local chemotherapy drugs, assessment, treatment planning, ergonomics and advanced periodontal instrumentation.
The course also includes five clinical days on campus where students will have the opportunity and practice treating patients, said Roman.
“This is the first time this course has been offered at Middlesex College. Hygienists and other dental hygiene programs have requested a clinical refresher course in the past, and we decided it would be a good idea to organize one, ”said Roman.
There could be several reasons hygienists want to take this course, Roman said,
1. They have taken a break from their private practice and want to get back to their level before returning to work.
2. They have completed their dental hygiene program, have practiced but would like a refresher to help them develop certain skills.
3. They’ve graduated from a dental hygiene program, took a long hiatus from getting their license, and would like a refresher course, but they’re definitely adding it to their resume.
Hoffman said this class looks manageable and time efficient if she chooses to return to the field and anyone who has taken a break should attend, regardless of size.
“Over the past four years, I have received many inquiries about this course. Since there was interest, we thought it would be a good idea to expand the course, and we are the only dental hygiene refresher course in the state of New Jersey, ”said Roman.
Roman said hygienists who take this course might add it to their resumes. In addition, at the end of this course, hygienists will receive 15 continuing education credits.
“Having the opportunity to receive 15 credits from this course is an amazing thing to offer. Especially if I choose to return to Middlesex College to take other dental courses offered so that I can be better prepared when I return to dental work, ”said Hoffman.
