Uganda Christian University – UCU has acquired new equipment for the School of Medicine and Dentistry to support student learning.

A portion of the shipment worth 1.46 billion shillings will be delivered to training hospitals which are used by UCU students for internship training. They include Mengo, Namirembe, Mukono General Hospital and Allan Galpin II-AGHCII Health Center, the university health facility.

The equipment includes ten dental suites and twelve dental phantom heads. A dental suite includes, among other things, gloves, hand instruments, face masks, toothbrushes, anesthesia solutions, imaging devices, dental chairs and CAD / CAM systems software used to design and complete prototypes.

UCU’s dean of dentistry, Dr James Magala, said they lacked adequate equipment to run the department’s operations. He notes that most of this equipment will help students, especially finalists.

The National Council for Higher Education has authorized UCU to admit only ten dental students per academic year.

However, last year, in February, the university was ordered to suspend admissions until September due to a lack of proper infrastructure and equipment. This followed the third joint inspection of medical and dental schools and university hospitals in Uganda carried out from February 10-14, 2020 by the Joint National Council of Medical and Dental Practitioners of the East African Community and EAC.

The inspection examined the areas of governance and management, university programs, human resources, student affairs, infrastructure, program monitoring and evaluation, research and innovation.

The university also obtained additional equipment such as walking aids and pediatric devices from Uganda Christian University Partners, a non-profit charitable organization in the United States.

Dr Gerald Tumusiime, UCU Medical School, said most of their students complain about the lack of adequate equipment for practical training in hospitals.

“We’re sure the new equipment will strengthen the skills lab where students can practice before experiencing real life. Most hospitals only have the equipment to treat patients, but not enough for students to practice. Said Dr Tumusiime.

Dr John Kitayimbwa, deputy vice chancellor in charge of academics, said the university had considered investing in a medical school to comply with the requirements of oversight entities such as NCHE and the Joint National Council of Medical Practitioners. and dental from the East African Community and EAC.
